Healthy Diet Nutrition - Did You Know Obesity is Overtaking Smoking As America's Number One Killer?

healthy diet

Diet tips are a dime a dozen. Type in the word 'diet' and you'll be swamped with thousands upon thousands of web pages mostly dedicated to healthy diet nutrition. But the tricky part is choosing which diet is right for you. The truth is, some diets may not play well with you, especially if you have preexisting health conditions.

Here are some effective strategies on how to stick to healthy diet nutrition:

Expand your horizon and discover more foods and more ways of preparing foods. Diet life shouldn't be boring. You don't need to eat the same kind of food day in and day out. If you'd like to discover different ways of cooking food, make friends with Google. The wider the variety of foods you're eating, the more vitamins and minerals get into your system.

Healthy Dining Trends When Eating Out

alcoholic beverages

When you plan to eat out, avoid skipping meals in order to save up for a big restaurant dinner. The following entrees generally have less fat: dishes that are baked, broiled, grilled, roasted, steamed, and stir-fried. Entrees with marinara, sweet and sour, and vinaigrette also contain fewer calories.

On the other hand, these dishes generally have more fat - entrees that are au gratin, batter fried, those with bearnaise and hollandaise sauce, dishes that are breaded, creamed, scalloped, primed, rich, crispy, with gravy or butter, and those with Alfredo sauce.

Also consider the portion sizes which have been growing over the last 20 years. Today, portion sizes range anywhere from two to three sizes larger than what they should be. Choose a 4-6 ounce portion of meat over a 12 ounce portion to save on needless calories, fat, and money. Additionally, order what you want to. For example, if you're dining with a group and everyone orders an appetizer and you don't care for one, you don't have to participate and wind up consuming empty calories.

weight loss

There are many ways in which one can begin or go through a diet.

However no matter what the diet is, you have to be determined to go through with it, if it works or not does also depend on the product/program, but you cannot determine if it works by not trying it full way.

You can and will be able to follow through any diet plan or program you want to if you simply desire it enough to actually go through with it. If you really want to lose weight actually do it.

- Believe in yourself so you can pull through

X-ray Radiation Exposure

your doctor

Routine” is without a specific clinical reason. And the answer is no, according to the Food and Drug Administration, not even “routine” chest or dental x-rays. In fact, the FDA discourages any routine x-ray without clinical evidence of its necessity, because every x-ray you have adds to your total radiation exposure.

The FDA recommends the following precautions:

Don’t decide on your own that you need an x-ray.

Don’t insist on an x-ray.

If your doctor or dentist orders an x-ray, ask if it’s really needed for diagnosis or treatment, but

your doctor

Don’t refuse an ex-ray if your doctor explains why it’s needed.

Tell your doctor or dentist about any similar x-rays you’ve had; perhaps, if it can be located and reviewed, it may cancel the need for a repeat.

Worried About Dietary Supplements?

Zeisel says

Dietary supplements are amazingly popular health items -- a fact which is raising eyebrows among researchers who say many safety questions remain unanswered. The supplement market may reach $14 billion annually by 2002, up from $6.5 billion in 1996, and unlike drugs, the Food and Drug Administration does not tightly regulate these compounds.

Dr. Steven Zeisel, a professor of nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, says the government should protect the public by creating a special supplement category called "nutraceuticals" and requiring that such products be proven safe before being sold.

You Can Be Healthy at Any Size

fitness level

Did you know it's possible to be healthy at any size? A new study confirms that you don't have to be thin to be fit.

According to Steven Blair, director of research at the Cooper Institute for Aerobics Research in Dallas, "There is a misdirected obsession with weight and weight loss. The focus is all wrong. It's fitness that is the key."

Blair's study shows that trim people who don't exercise have twice the death rate of larger people who do exercise. You don't need to lose one pound to be healthy, but you do need to:

Move. Take your eyes off your scale and move your body in enjoyable ways. Dance. Stretch. Garden. Park a few extra steps away. Walk for five minutes a day. Start where you are, begin slowly and pick up the pace as your fitness level grows. Make a 1 percent change now, and in 100 days you'll be at a dramatically different fitness level.

Healthy Weight Loss Diet - Top Popular Diets to Avoid

weight loss

If you are seeking a healthy weight loss diet, you may want to first understand how popular diets work. This will enable you to choose the right diet plan. Any diet you encounter will generally fall in one of the following categories:

The No-Fat Diet

The Concept: These diets encourage eating every food you encounter that has no fat. The logic thrown about is that since it's fat-free, it will not make you fat.

The Truth: Everyone knows that fats contain calories, but no-fat diets aren't the answer. Some amount of fat in your diet keeps off hunger, helps in protein digestion and absorption of vitamin D. Skim milk and no-fat cereals deprive you of these benefits. Furthermore, most no-fat diets are packed with sugar and are devoid of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Before you choose a healthy weight loss diet always read the label for the exact content.

Healthy Diet Plans

diet plan

It is very important that whatever diet you follow that it is a healthy diet plan. You may know someone or have heard of someone who went on a diet, lost the weight they were trying to lose and ended up feeling terrible. All diets are not made the same and you must be very careful about which diet plan you chose. A healthy diet plan will be one that lets you eat a variety of food and doesn't insist on you just eating one thing. Your body needs different foods from different foods groups if it is to function properly. Going on a all watermelon diet is not good for your body and is not something that you would be able to keep up in the long run. Remember that part of going on a diet is to teach yourself a new way of eating. If the diet that you are thinking if going on is not something that you will be able to maintain long term than it is best to pick a more realistic healthy diet plan.

Healthy Diet Meal Plan - 6 Tips to Losing Weight by Eating

meal plan

Healthy meal plan does not necessarily need to be complicated. It is not about being compliant with all those tight and very restricting diets that might even lead to "survival mode" or nutritional deficiencies. A healthy diet plan is a meal plan that promotes overall wellness with natural foods and is very basic, simple and easy to follow.

Here are 6 tips to following a healthy diet meal plan.

1. It does not mean deprivation

Have you tried diets in the past that deprive you of foods, especially those high in carbohydrates and fats? Do you have to carefully assess your calorie intake? Losing weight and being healthy should not be that way. You still deserve all the treats you are used to. Not all carbohydrates and fats are bad, some are necessary for our body.

Hair Loss in Women - Seven Reasons You Could Lose Your Hair

growth cycle

For many women there are few things more distressing than the thought of going bald. Losing hair or a receding hairline is expected in men over a certain age. For a woman - shedding hair can be a terrible blow to self esteem striking at the root of her femininity.

Hair loss in women is not an uncommon condition. Some experts suggest that as many as one in four women - maybe around 25 million women in the USA alone - experience it at some time in their lives.

So what are the main causes?

1. Hormones - We all know that men have hormones too but women are subject to greater hormonal flux with higher frequency and over a much longer period than men. Pregnancy, childbirth and menopause are all conditions unique to women that can result in thinning hair.

Hair Loss In Women - Causes and Cures

hair loss

We hear a lot these days about male pattern baldness but female pattern baldness affects 1 out of every 4 women in the United States. Hair loss in women can be even more troubling than for a man. Hair loss is generally accepted as a normal part of the aging process in men, but this is not the case for women. Lack of a beautiful head of hair can be especially devastating to a woman's self-esteem.

Hereditary thinning, also called alopecia, accounts for 95% of female hair loss. While many women believe that the use of hair dryers, hot curlers, or flat irons may be causing their hair loss, this is simply not the case. Harsh hair treatments or rough handling may cause the hairs to break off near the scalp, but this is temporary and cannot cause long term hair loss.

The modern average size of women in America stands at size 12, while men stand at size 36. Simply because this is the average weight of the population does not entail that it is a healthy one. Foods that May Protect Against Stroke

Pop quiz: What do apples, pears, cucumbers and cauliflower have in common? Answer: The edible parts of all of them are white.Foods that May Protect Against Stroke And these fruits and vegetables have now been identified as foods that may dramatically lower the risk of stroke. This news comes from a decade long Dutch study that involved more than 20,000 adults age 20 to 65, none of whom had cardiovascular disease when they enrolled. Over the 10 years, 233 of the study participants suffered strokes. Researchers have since compared the diets the participants reported eating to see which fruits and vegetables, if any, were associated with a lower risk of stroke. Based on information contained in the questionnaires all participants filled out, those who ate the most "white" fruits and vegetables were 52 percent less likely to have had strokes than those who didn't eat as much of these foods. The amount that seemed to make a difference was 171 grams, the equivalent of one medium to large apple daily. The most commonly eaten white foods were apples, pears and applesauce. The study was published online September 15 in Stroke.

Foods That Lower Breast Cancer Risk

Foods That Lower Breast Cancer Risk

The latest on links between breast cancer and diet suggests that consuming an abundance of vegetables, fruits and legumes may help women cut their risks of one type of breast cancer. After 26 years of following more than 86,000 nurses in the U.S., researchers have reported that those whose diets were rich in plant foods, while low on meat, sodium and processed carbohydrates had a 20 percent lower risk of developing estrogen-receptor-negative breast cancer, malignancies that account for about 25 percent of all cases. Here, breast cancer cells lack receptors for estrogen. When estrogen receptors are present, as they are in most cases of breast cancer, treatment can include tamoxifen and other drugs to "block" estrogen's access to cells, thus reducing the risk of recurrence. No drugs are currently available to reduce the risk of recurrence of estrogen receptor negative breast cancer. The dietary findings were published online August 10 by the American Journal of Epidemiology. In other news, a study performed with mice published in the August/September issue of Nutrition and Cancer showed that breast cancer risk dropped significantly when the animals' regular diet included walnuts in an amount that would translate to about 2 ounces a day for humans. Neither of these findings proves that eating vegetables - or walnuts - are directly responsible for the reported risk reductions, but suggest that follow up studies are worth pursuing.

6 Ways to Treat Sun Poisoning

6 Ways to Treat Sun Poisoning

It's August, and temperatures are still sky-high. Watch out for sun poisoning.

Sun poisoning is a layman's term for the symptoms that can accompany severe sunburn, such as nausea, vomiting, fever, chills and headache. It should not be confused with sunstroke (also referred to as heatstroke), a medical emergency that occurs when the body overheats to the point that it can no longer regulate its internal temperature.

You can help prevent sun poisoning by remaining indoors during peak daylight hours (10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the summer months), wearing protective clothing and using sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15. If you do get sun poisoning, stay out of the sun and try the following to help alleviate the symptoms:

An Unsafe Cleanse?

An Unsafe Cleanse?

Touted as a way to cleanse the body of stored toxins, chaparral (Larrea divaricata) is a desert shrub that grows in Mexico and the southwestern United States. It has a history of use by Native Americans, who made a tea from the leaves to treat chicken pox, colds, diarrhea, menstrual cramps, pain, snake bites, skin disorders and rheumatism.

Chaparral is now available in capsules, tablets and tincture form, and is promoted as a treatment for acne, dandruff, diabetes, PMS, sciatica, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcers, urinary tract infections, cancer and the aforementioned toxin cleansing.

An Unsafe Cleanse?

I don't recommend taking chaparral internally (as a tea or supplement) for any condition. Although it has been linked to rare cases of kidney and liver dysfunction, it appears to be generally nontoxic, but I haven’t seen any scientific evidence showing that it is effective when taken internally for the conditions for which it is so often recommended, including cleansing the body of toxins. However, I do recommend chaparral for topical use to treat eczema and other kinds of skin irritation and inflammation. You can buy chaparral lotions or salves from stores that sell herbal preparations.

So how can you prevent gallstones? Since most stones are composed of cholesterol, diet plays a role in their formation. It's delightful to grill outdoors when the weather is warm. Unfortunately, grilling meats can lead to the production of carcinogenic (potentially cancer-causing) chemicals called heterocyclic amines (HAs). To reduce HAs, try the following:

Limit the amount of meats you grill, and make grilled vegetables the main course.

Pre-cook your foods in the oven or on the stovetop and finish them off outdoors - less grill time means fewer carcinogens.

If you do grill meat, cook it thoroughly but avoid charring or blackening it (don't eat any blackened parts).

Heart Attacks in Women

Conventional medical wisdom holds that the symptoms of heart attacks in women can be very different from the ones men experience.Heart Attacks in Women Maybe not. A Canadian researcher who challenged this belief has found evidence to show that heart attack symptoms don't actually vary dramatically between the sexes. The investigator, Martha Mackay, a cardiac nurse, studied 305 consecutive patients undergoing angioplasty (a procedure to open clogged coronary arteries), which briefly causes symptoms similar to those of a heart attack. Her team found no gender differences in rates of chest discomfort or other typical symptoms such as arm discomfort, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, clammy skin and indigestion-like feelings.Heart Attacks in Women However, she found that women were more likely than men to experience the classic symptoms of heart attack plus throat, jaw and neck discomfort. Commenting on the study, a spokesperson for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada noted that while women may describe their pain differently than men, their most common symptom is still chest pain. She also noted that women are less likely to believe they're having a heart attack and therefore more likely to put off seeking treatment.

3 Steps to Choosing Healthy Cereal

3 Steps to Choosing Healthy Cereal

Even if you avoid the brightly colored boxes of sugarcoated kids' cereals, you may not be picking the healthiest breakfast options. Sugars, calories and fats can be hidden in many cereals - including those that are marketed as "healthy." Consider the following when choosing cereals:

Sugars: Choose varieties with eight grams of sugar or less per serving. Be aware that cereals with dried fruits provide additional sugar that can quickly add up. Instead of dried fruit, add fresh, whole fruit to your cereal.

3 Steps to Choosing Healthy Cereal

Fiber: Aim for at least three grams of fiber per serving. The words whole grain and whole wheat are not always good indicators that fiber content will be substantial, especially if they appear as flour on the ingredient panel. Some healthful choices are steel-cut oats, bran and wheat germ cereals, and whole grain cereals with actual bits of grain and no added sugars.
